Mutilate ReadMe.txt
Introduction
Mutilate is a Windows 95 file wiper utility with three predefined security
levels to accommodate varying needs. A customized security level is also
included.
To use Mutilate, simply highlight the file(s) you wish to destroy & click
the mutilate button.
Mutilate originated as a shell for DOS programs such as
PGP(Pretty Good Privacy). Later versions of Mutilate retain this ability.
A file wiper is necessary to render target files destroyed and unrecoverable.
Use of DOS delete or the Window 95 Recycle Bin merely removes the operating
system's pointer to the file, ALL THE DATA REMAINS ON YOUR HARD DRIVE
OR FLOPPY DISK until the space is reclaimed and overwritten by another file.
The remaining data can be easily recovered with the use of a software
recovery utility. Sensitive files may also be vulnerable to advanced recovery
techniques, EVEN WHEN OVERWRITTEN. Mutilate is designed to foil attempts to
recover deleted files.
Installation
To install mutilate, run setup.exe (in the distribution diskette or
directory) & follow the instructions. You can drag a shortcut to
mutilate.exe onto your desktop from the setup destination directory in
Windows Explorer.
How Mutilate's Internal Wiper Works
Mutilate is designed to totally destroy the target file, so use with caution!
Depending upon the security level selected, all bits in the target file are
overwritten with 0's, 1's, and/or random bit patterns. For multiple wipe
options such as the High, Intense, and Custom levels, overwrite order is
always random, 1's, 0's, random, 1's, 0's, etc. After the last overwrite
pass is completed, Mutilate obscures the target file name by changing the
name to a file name including the root drive letter plus a series of
characters i.e.: C:\~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~". If this name already exists, a
similar name is chosen.
Security Levels
In the Normal security level setting (on the menu bar see
Options|Security Level), Mutilate sets all target file's bits to 0.
The High security level setting first writes over the target file with
pseudo-random characters, the bits are then set to 1, finally all bits are
set to zero.
The Intense level repeats the High Security level 3 times.
For special needs or for the truly paranoid, the custom level allows any
combination of up to 99 passes each of 0's 1's or random bit patterns.
DOS Shell
Mutilate can also be used as a shell for DOS wipe programs. A secondary
delete program is used instead of Mutilate's internal wiper. In external
wiper mode, an external DOS wiper program accomplishes the actual
destruction of the target file(s). Mutilate is highly versatile in that it
is not confined to any particular underlying DOS software.
External wiper mode supports multiple file deletion and long filenames
even if the underlying DOS wiper does not.
Use with any Windows 95 friendly DOS program that utilizes the format:
deleteUtility.exe [wiper switches] fileToDelete
To view actual DOS operation, select Options|Dos Window|Show DOS Window.
To hide the Dos Window, select Options|Dos Window|Hide DOS Window.
To switch to an external wiper Select Options | External Wiper and
enter the complete path to the program file of the DOS wiper. Include
the file extension and switches if any. To return to Mutilate's
internal wiper, just enter "mutilate" instead of the DOS file path.
Preliminary tests were conducted with the following DOS based program:
Pretty Good Privacy:
pgp.exe -w (file wipe switch only)
available at -> http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html
The DOS utility should be set to execute without further DOS prompts, if
further input is required after execution of the DOS program, your will
need to uncheck the Hide DOS window option.
